Carmen Amaya | The art of flamenco in Barcelona

Carmen Amaya was a legendary Spanish-Romani flamenco dancer, born in the Somorrostro district of Barcelona.

She began dancing with her father, a guitarist, when she was still a very young child, performing in bars and on the streets of the city. As a young woman, she began performing throughout Spain in well-known theatres, such as the Coliseo in Madrid. As her fame and reputation grew, she danced all over the world, including in South America and the United States, leaving her home country of Spain for about 10 years.

Carmen Amaya – The return of the flamenco artist to Barcelona and Spain

By the time she returned to Spain and Barcelona in 1947, she was already a world-famous flamenco dancer and a film star in her own right. She performed in prestigious theatres across Europe, but began to fall ill in the early 1960s. It was this illness that ultimately put an end to her illustrious career. She died in 1963, from kidney failure, in the Catalan seaside resort of Begur.

Although her life was cut tragically short, her legend lives on. Recognized as one of the greatest and most unique flamenco dancers who ever lived, she also revolutionized the world of flamenco with her style and technique. She was also a folk heroine; an inspiration who began with humble gypsy beginnings and then conquered the world…

At Art & Wine, we have decided to pay tribute to this Barcelona legend of the flamenco world by creating our painting, “Carmen”.
